What I Wish I Knew Starting Out in Marketing

My co-founder Yash and I didn’t start out trying to build a marketing agency. Before that, I was obsessed with figuring out how money worked, and it led me straight into day trading. I took $500 from my parents and lost it fast. From there, Yash and I ran a trading Instagram page for over a year, trying to sell a lifestyle and monetize through courses and referrals. We stayed consistent the whole time. We made almost nothing.

Looking back, that failure taught me more than most of what came after it. Here’s what I wish I’d known earlier.

Consistency without direction isn’t strategy, it’s just delay.

We were putting in real effort for over a year on that trading page, showing up daily, staying consistent, and it went nowhere because we were consistent at the wrong thing. It was only when we finally asked ourselves what skill we actually had, graphic design, video editing, social media, that Yavi Media became possible. I wish I’d asked that question months earlier instead of assuming consistency alone would eventually pay off.

Your first real client will probably still go wrong, and that’s not the failure it feels like.

Our first client was a small e-commerce brand. We were inexperienced, the payment got stuck, I panicked, we refunded the money, and the client disappeared. It felt like our one real shot was gone. It wasn’t. It was just the first of many lessons about running an actual business rather than posting content about one.

A weak offer will sink you before your outreach volume ever matters.

We spent months messaging business owners daily, real estate agents, e-commerce brands, anyone, and got mostly silence or rejection. The problem wasn’t effort; it was that we sounded like freelancers offering “to run ads,” not a system solving a real business problem. Once we understood that businesses care about revenue and booked jobs, not ad management, everything shifted.

Niching down felt like limiting ourselves. It was the opposite.

We tried e-commerce, real estate, nothing really clicked. The turning point came when we narrowed to painting and home service contractors specifically and rebuilt our entire offer around results instead of activity. That first niche client generated $37,000 in revenue in month one. That case study changed everything that came after it.

What I’d tell someone starting today

Don’t mistake showing up consistently for making progress; check whether you’re consistent at the right thing. And don’t be afraid to narrow your focus; the narrowing is usually where the real traction begins, not where ambition goes to die.

Author Bio:
I’m the co-founder of
Yavi Media. We run marketing exclusively for painting and remodeling contractors, Meta and Google ad campaigns paired with an AI system that responds to every lead in under one second and books the appointment straight onto the contractor’s calendar. Most contractors don’t lose jobs because their ads fail. They lose jobs because they’re on a ladder when the lead comes in, and whoever answers first gets the work.
I write and speak on Meta ads strategy, contractor lead generation, and how AI search is changing who gets hired for home service work, including how businesses can show up when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity who to hire, rather than just where they rank on Google.
