From Idea to MVP: A Founder Engineer’s Guide to Building Travel Platforms

Authored by: Ioan Istrate

Travel technology looks simple from the outside. People search for hotels, compare prices, and book. But behind every travel platform is a data problem that most founders underestimate — and it starts with a question nobody in the industry is asking properly: what makes a hotel “good” for this specific traveler?

I spent 2.5 years working on hotel ranking systems at U.S. News & World Report, serving 60 million users. When I left to build Tripvento — a B2B API that ranks hotels by traveler intent — I thought my experience would make the transition smooth. I was wrong about almost everything except one thing: the technical decisions you make in the first 90 days define whether your platform scales or collapses.

Here’s what I learned building a travel platform from a first commit to 212 destinations across 25 countries in under four months as a solo founder.

Start with the data model, not the interface

Most travel founders start by designing the booking flow or the search page. I started by asking: what data do I actually need to rank a hotel properly, and where does it live?

The answer shaped everything. Hotel metadata from aggregators is unreliable. Review sentiment varies wildly by source. Location data — what’s physically around a hotel — is the most undervalued signal in the industry. A five star hotel next to a construction site is not a five star experience.

I chose PostgreSQL with PostGIS for geospatial queries and pgvector for semantic analysis. That single decision — keeping everything in one database instead of splitting across specialized services — let me move fast without managing infrastructure complexity. Early on, I stored every hotel to POI distance as a database row — 55.6 million of them at just 33 cities. Switching to on demand PostGIS spatial queries eliminated that table entirely and cut the database by 55% while scaling to 212 cities. When you’re a solo founder, every additional service you deploy is a service you maintain at 2 AM.

Automate quality before you automate scale

Travel data is messy. Hotel names are inconsistent across sources. Descriptions are marketing copy, not facts. Categories are unreliable.

My first instinct was to clean data manually and scale later. That lasted about two cities before I realized it would never work. Instead, I built a multi LLM pipeline where models check each other’s work. One model identifies and classifies destinations. Another audits hotel data for accuracy. A third curates the final output. Each stage has automated quality gates.

This pipeline is what allowed me to scale from 3 cities to 212 without hiring a QA team. The lesson: if your data quality process requires a human in the loop for every record, you don’t have a platform — you have a consulting business.

Let your users tell you what matters

Before spending months building an API nobody asked for, I launched programmatic SEO pages — destination guides that showcase the ranking engine’s output for real cities. These pages serve two purposes: they drive organic traffic and they generate real click through data across 14 traveler personas.

That data tells me which personas matter most, which cities have demand, and how travelers actually interact with intent-based rankings. It’s a B2B2C lab that costs almost nothing to run and produces the evidence I need before approaching enterprise customers.

If you’re building a B2B travel product, find a way to put your technology in front of real travelers before you pitch to platforms. The behavioral data you collect is more convincing than any deck.

Three things I’d tell a technical founder entering travel

First, treat ranking as a data problem. Most platforms rank by price, ratings, or commission. None of these reflect what a specific traveler actually needs. If you can solve the relevance problem, you have a defensible product.

Second, keep your stack boring. Django, PostgreSQL, a Linux server. I run 212 destinations on infrastructure that a single engineer can manage. Resist the urge to adopt every new tool. Simplicity is a competitive advantage when you’re moving fast.

Third, ship before you’re comfortable. My first three city pages had rough edges. They also got indexed by Google and started ranking within weeks. Perfection is the enemy of traction, especially in travel where the data changes constantly anyway.

Building a travel platform is harder than it looks — but the industry is ripe for founders who approach it as an engineering problem rather than a marketing one. The incumbents are optimizing for commission. There’s a wide open lane for anyone optimizing for the traveler.
