AI Should Help You Build Your Style, Not Choose It
Authored by: Sarunas Rodriguez
It is useful when AI can help us create outfits in seconds.
But I do not think it should become the thing that decides your style.
A lot of people now use AI to create complete outfits for them. I understand why. It is super fast and easy. But if you let AI make every choice, you can end up following something generic or whatever looks trendy without actually liking those clothes.
Style is very personal. It should represent your taste, your mood, your lifestyle, your wardrobe, and the way you want to be seen.
That is the part I think people forget.
I started thinking about this more while building Ask My Wardrobe, a tool that helps people see how clothes and outfits look on them before they buy. The more I worked on it, and the more I watched how people used it, the more I realized that AI in fashion should not replace personal taste.
It should help people understand it better.
How To Know If A Suggested Look Fits You
One of the biggest risks with AI fashion tools is that people can start accepting whatever AI gives them.
It might create an outfit that looks “OK”. It might follow current trends and match colors correctly, but that doesn’t mean the outfit fits your real style.
There is a difference between an outfit that looks good and an outfit that feels like you, something you really enjoy wearing.
That is why we should be careful with letting AI make complete fashion decisions without double checking. Yes, it can give great ideas, but you still need to look at the result and ask yourself:
- Would this fit my lifestyle?
- Would it match the clothes I already own?
- Would I feel confident wearing it outside?
- Would I still wear these clothes if they weren’t trending?
Those questions still matter. AI can help you move faster, but your own taste should still lead the process.
Small Details Make Style More Personal
One thing I did not expect when building Ask My Wardrobe was how often people would use it for more than basic clothes.
I thought most people would use it to try shirts, dresses, jackets, pants, and similar pieces. But users started building full looks with bags, glasses, watches, shoes, necklaces, and other accessories.
That made a lot of sense once I saw it.
Accessories can completely change the feeling of an outfit. A watch can make a look feel cleaner. A bag can make it feel more intentional. Glasses, shoes, or a necklace can turn a basic outfit into something more personal.
It is not only about choosing clothes. It is about testing the small details that help you feel unique.
Don’t accept the first outfit AI gives you. Try different combinations and see which version feels closer to you.
That is how AI should be used.
Match New Clothes With What You Already Own
Another thing I noticed is that many people use the app before buying clothes online.
If you are thinking about buying a jacket, you can test it with your own jeans, shoes, bags, or accessories. If you are thinking about buying a dress, you can see how it works with the pieces you already wear.
That helps you keep your style consistent instead of buying random items that look good once but never fit into your wardrobe.
This is one of the most useful ways people use Ask My Wardrobe. It helps them compare new clothes with their current wardrobe before making a decision.
This matters because many bad clothing purchases happen when something looks good by itself, but does not work with anything else you own.
AI can help prevent that, but only when it is used the right way, by helping you feel more sure before you buy.
Final Thought
AI should never replace personal style.
It can help you test outfits faster and see how accessories, shoes, bags, and watches change a look. It can also help you match new clothes with your current wardrobe before you buy.
But the final choice should still come from you.
Because style should not be something AI decides for everyone.
It should still feel personal.
