Discovering who is linking to your website is crucial for SEO and marketing efforts. To help you uncover these valuable insights, we’ve gathered eight expert tips from marketing managers, founders, and directors. From utilizing SEMrush for backlink insights to exploring Google Search Console, these professionals share their top strategies for finding out who is linking to your website.
Use SEMrush for Backlink Insights
Using this tool, you get not only information about who has linked your site but also a mass of other useful data. SEMrush provides detailed information about the quality of backlinks, such as the domain authority of the linking site, the type of link, and the anchor text used.
In addition, it has one of the largest databases of backlinks, with over 20 billion backlinks indexed. This means that SEMrush can provide you with a comprehensive list of backlinks pointing to a website, giving you a complete picture of its backlink profile.
And the last unique capability that this tool provides is analyzing the backlink profiles of competitors, giving insight into their link-building strategies.
Spy on Competitors’ Backlinks
This backlink checker allows you to spy on your competitor’s backlinks without them knowing and offers insights on how you can refine your backlink strategy to gain an advantage.
With it, you can gauge the quality of sites linking to a certain domain, measure their growth over the last year, and generate reports that give you more information on new and lost links. This report is crucial in guiding your link-building strategy.
Explore Various Backlink Analysis Tools
To find out who is linking to a website, you can use backlink analysis tools. These tools work by crawling the web and indexing links and web pages and can provide insights into the backlinks pointing to a particular website. Here are some of the best tools you can use:
1. Moz Link Explorer: A tool by Moz that allows you to analyze a site’s backlinks and find link-building opportunities.
2. Majestic SEO: Another tool for backlink analysis that provides information on unique referring domains, anchor text, and other link metrics.
By using these tools, you can get a comprehensive view of your backlink profile and identify opportunities for improving your site’s SEO.
Analyze Backlinks With UberSuggest
UberSuggest is my go-to SEO and backlinking tool. I can grab any URL and generate a list of websites that are linking to it.
It’s a pretty quick process: Go to the Backlinks Overview, then paste the website’s URL. You’ll get a list of websites that are linking to the website along with the anchor text they use, the domain rating, spam score, date, and more.
You can also sort your list of results by date, domain authority, and other criteria.
Comprehensive Backlink Analysis With Ahrefs
The best way to find out who is linking to a website is by using a backlink analysis tool, such as Ahrefs. This tool can provide a comprehensive list of all the websites that are linking to a particular site, along with other useful data, such as the number of links, the quality of the linking sites, and the anchor text used in the links.
By analyzing this data, website owners can gain insights into their backlink profile, identify potential opportunities for link building, and address any issues, such as spammy or low-quality links, that may harm their search rankings.
Free Analysis With Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools provides a full perspective on the backlinks of multiple websites, and it compares them freely. Sometimes the answer is right under our noses and is as accessible as it is efficient. Bing Webmaster enables users to compare up to three websites to their website, outlining backlinks and their top ten domains and anchors.
Use Google Search Operators
Using Google Search Operators helps you find out who is linking to a website. I use the “link” search operator to do this.
Just type in “link:” followed by the domain you want to investigate (e.g. “link: www.terkel.io”)
Then remove the homepage from the results by typing “-terkel.io” (e.g. “link: www.terkel.io -terkel.io”)
Of course, you can just type in “link:” followed by whichever domain you’re investigating, but sometimes it doesn’t generate the best results, so removing the homepage links can show you all links that go to other pages across their site.
If Not SEMrush, Use Google Search Console
The best and easiest way would be to use SEO tools like SEMrush to run a Backlink Analysis. So if you want to know who is linking to your website, you’d find it there.
If you don’t have SEMrush, you can use Google Search Console. Just go to Search Console > Choose Your Property > Links > External Links > Top Linking Sites.
