What kind of blog should I start?

Don’t Get Intimidated by How Crowded the Space is

If you have an idea for a blog and you have passion, knowledge, and a flair for the subject matter, then you should go ahead and launch your own blog and go full steam ahead.

Many people decline to pursue because they’re intimidated by the number of people who are already writing and posting content about the same subject matter. That should be factored into your thinking, but if the subject is something you love to write about, you should still pursue it.

Find a way to stand out through your style. One successful podcast host has always said, “No one else has your special sauce.” She’s right. If you know your subject and you can present it well – and with a unique style – launch it and go all out. Eventually, you will find an audience.

What Can You Talk About for Hours?

Determine what you can talk about for hours. What are you passionate about, or is there something you have an opinion about? Whatever your interest might be, turn that into a blog.

Get creative with new ideas. It’s a fun way to dive deep into a topic that you enjoy and turn that into an outlet that other people enjoy as well.

Have a Clear Vision and Start Planning

Writing a blog for the first time can be intimidating, but the key is to get organized and figure out the purpose of your blog before you get started. Once you have a clear vision for your blog, it’s important to pick a topic and focus on a specific niche.

Doing this will give you a better understanding of what kind of content your readers will be looking for. It’s also important to think about the design and branding of your blog. Carefully select colors, fonts, and visuals that align with the tone and message of your blog.

This will help to create a consistent aesthetic and give readers a better experience.

Identify Your Passion and Expertise

Before starting a blog, it is important to know ourselves first and what our passion is. The first step is to identify the things that we are passionate about or our area of expertise if we already have some experience.

Afterwards, we can stick with a niche, which is a specific topic or industry we have knowledge and passion about. By focusing on a specific niche, we can attract a dedicated audience who are interested in learning more about it.

To make it easier, we should prepare a list of our interests and passions and identify what sets us apart from others, then narrow down our niche. The next step is to tailor the content based on our personal style of blogging and niche, as well as think about a marketing strategy of how to grow our blog and audience.

What Do You Know that Others Want to Know?

Choosing a blogging niche is tough when you’re an idea machine. One way to narrow your focus is to think about the things you already know that other people want to know.

Think about the questions your own friends and family ask you. Do they view you as an expert on a particular topic? Do they treat you as a reliable source of information for something specific?

To run a successful blog, you need to consistently post content — and create content that’s better than what’s already out there. This is a lot easier to do when you are already an authority on a topic.

You’ll be able to create content that’s more authentic and will resonate with your audience, which will make other people more likely to trust your blog as a reliable source.

Study Your Audience and Pick Afterwards

Deciding upon which kind of blog you’re going to start is not an easy task, nor one that should be taken lightly. If you start a blog and put all of your hard work into it, but it turns out that it’s a blog about something not many people read about, you’re not going to see any majorly positive results.

That’s why I recommend a more methodical approach to this question. Firstly, you should research the market – this will lead you to a concrete piece of information related to what people like reading about.

You can do this with some Googling and some statistics. Then, you should take a close look at the list of the most viewed topics and blogs and pick one that interests you – it’s never a good idea to write about something you’re not interested in. That’s how you cover the two most important things about picking a blog.

To sum up – learn about people’s interests, and then pick the most interesting popular topic. That equals success!

Have Ideas that ChatGPT Can’t Create in that Niche Yet

For me, blogging is fundamentally a digital means for transmitting expertise and passion. That means, to a reasonable extent, you should focus your blog on niches where you have unique insider insights to share with your audience.

Having distinct perspectives on your niche is even more critical now that chatbots and other AI text models are becoming astronomically intelligent in producing human-like content. What will keep readers coming to your blog is the uniqueness of your perspective (preferably from in-person experience).

What exceptional ideas can you bring to the table that chatbots can not bring yet?

My advice is to blog on what you have intense experience in (passion or curiosity to experiment on). And yes, the niche should also have the potential for monetization as you likely wouldn’t be operating on a benevolent grant from the United Nations.

List Your Interests in a Keyword Generation Tool

Most importantly, you want to start a blog on a topic you’re actually passionate about. Sure, there might be a golden opportunity in a niche about underwater basket weaving, but if that’s not something you enjoy writing about, is the niche really worth pursuing?

Here’s a good approach for generating blog niche ideas that you’ll actually enjoy writing about:

Make a list of your hobbies and interests. These can be hobbies you actively engage with (e.g., D&D), or topics you particularly care about (e.g., solar energy). For each of these hobbies or topics, pick out three seed keywords. These are keywords that first come to mind when you think of the hobby/topic in question.

Finally, run these keywords through any keyword idea generation tool (e.g., Ahrefs Keyword Explorer), and see the keyword difficulty of the new keywords that the tool will generate. If a particular topic/hobby niche has a lot of low-difficulty keywords, it’s worth pursuing.

Write What You Know

Confidently choose a topic that you’re not only knowledgeable about, but feel passionate about too. When you prove you’re an expert in something, like teaching others how to brand themselves on LinkedIn or other social media sites, it will be easy for your readers to trust what you have to say.

When you select an area you can own with enthusiasm and convey that message to others, folks will want to follow you and eagerly look forward to your posts for credible, interesting insight!
