How can I send a large video file?

Tools of the Past, Present and Future

Sending large videos is an issue users have been facing for a long time. The problem has given rise to a series of companies offering this service. The biggest and most controversial being Megaupload, which was led by Kim Dotcom, a notorious internet criminal convicted of online crimes in several countries.

Nowadays, you don’t have to turn to internet gangsters to send your videos. Most of us have at least one of the following services: Google Drive, Apple iCloud, Dropbox, or Microsoft Cloud. You can just upload the videos to your personal cloud and then get a link to the file from there.

If you are on mobile, you can also send the video with a messaging app like WhatsApp, making sure not to compress it too much in the process.

But what if your video is super sensitive? If it is a video of your customers or patients? Then you need a specialized video sharing service such asVideolab. These privacy-by-design platforms are the future of video sharing; we have come a long way since the Kim Dotcom days.

Use Cloud-based File Storage Solutions

What I personally do to send large video files is to use cloud-based file storage and sharing services such as Google Drive and Dropbox. These services allow you to upload the video file to their servers, and then share a download link with the recipient. This method is a great way to send large video files because it eliminates the need to send the video as an email attachment, which can be limited by the email service’s file size restrictions.

Also, it offers the ability for the recipient to preview the video file before downloading it, depending on the service, while offering the option for password protection for the files for privacy.

Mega.io

Mega.io is a great way to quickly and securely send a large video file. The video sharing platform uses robust encryption protocols such as TLS and AES-EAX, ensuring that your file is protected from the moment it leaves your device until it arrives safely with its intended recipient. Mega also provides generous storage space for each registered user, making it a suitable solution for the long-term storage of any video files you may have.

Plus, Mega’s intuitive user interface makes sending large video files fast and effortless; all you need to do is upload your file to Mega’s secure servers and then share the download link with those who need to access it. With Mega, sending large video files can be simple and stress-free!

HighTail

HighTail is a file-sharing service that allows you to upload and share large files with others. It works great for sharing videos, as the tool enables you to upload and share files up to 25 GB in size. You need to create an account and upload your files to use this platform. Then you can share a link to the files or invite people to collaborate on the project directly. HighTail also offers mobile apps for iOS and Android, which allow you to access and share your files wherever you are.

Additionally, HighTail is designed to help you with creative projects. It offers creative collaboration or project management features, including version control, creating to-do lists, managing tasks, real-time collaboration, and leaving comments on files. What’s important, HighTail has a free version that enables you to send files up to 100 MB. For larger file size limits and additional features, you need to get a paid plan.

Sharing Files Via Telegram

There are a lot of drive services and applications that allow sharing of large video files. However, they often carry the risk of links being leaked, or generally the data being corrupted throughout the process. Some applications like WhatsApp even trim down high-quality videos to lower resolutions to fit in their data sharing limits. Personally, the best application for the seamless sharing of video files without compromising quality or size is Telegram. Not only is the application very safe, with two-way authentication and encryption tools, but it also has a much higher data sharing limit of around 2 gigabytes after their recent update in 2020.

WeTransfer

I always use WeTransfer.com to send large video files. It’s a free, simple, and fast way to share files up to 2 GB. In a paid option, the transfer limit can be extended to 200 GB. What I also appreciate in WeTransfer are instant email notifications – one about successful file delivery and the other one received the moment the recipient downloads my file. I recommend it to anyone.

Dropbox

Your files are safe and organized with Dropbox. Dropbox Basic offers 2 GB of storage space and is free. There are other premium options with varied storage capacities available if you require more space.

No matter which plan you select, the total number of files you upload cannot go over your allotted storage space. There is no limitation on file size for files posted via desktop or mobile apps, unlike the 50 GB limit for items uploaded to dropbox.com. All you need to do to share your file indefinitely is copy and paste the link once it has been uploaded.

Wetransfer has a Clean Ui and Reliability

As the owner of a small animation studio, I frequently need to deliver large rendered videos to clients. My preferred method for this is using WeTransfer. Its clean, user-friendly interface, similar to that of Google, makes it easy to navigate. The process is as simple as dragging and dropping the files up to a whopping 20 gigabytes, inserting the client’s email, and adding a message before sending.

One of the key benefits of using WeTransfer is its reliability and speed. It allows for full utilization of my internet connection, ensuring that files are delivered quickly. Additionally, clients receive notifications when the files are ready for download, and I am also notified when the files are downloaded. This makes following up with clients a seamless process.

Upload to Google Drive

Google Drive links are the most reliable way to send large video files without tampering with their quality. Simply upload the file to your Google Drive, and once it is fully uploaded, run it to see if there is any discrepancy with the original video (which is highly unlikely), and then proceed to create a link and share the video link to someone you want to view the file. The best thing about using Google Drive to share large video files is that you can control the access conveniently; hence, you can allow access or restrict it as needed.
