### Measure Indoor Air With an NDIR Monitor

In early October I updated a troubleshooting page about Zigbee devices going unavailable in Home Assistant. It pulls roughly ten times the search demand of any buying guide I have published in the same category. When I checked what outranks it, almost every result was a forum thread. Home Assistant Community, Reddit, Facebook, YouTube.

So the question I ask about a smart home gift is not what the thing does. It is what happens the week after.

My pick is a standalone NDIR carbon dioxide monitor, which is not a device anybody puts on a wish list. The Aranet4 Home is where most people land, at around 189 dollars, and Govee sells cheaper NDIR models for anyone who wants a real reading without that price. That pick is not from my own desk. It comes from the sensor specification and independent testing, which with carbon dioxide happens to be the part that decides whether a monitor is honest at all.

The first reason is unglamorous. A gift that needs a hub, a border router, a protocol and the recipient's existing account quietly makes you their helpdesk on the 26th of December. A CO2 monitor needs none of it. Two AA batteries run the Aranet for about four years, the number sits on the screen with no app in the way, and nothing about it cares whether they already use Apple or Google or Amazon or Samsung.

The second reason is that it tells them something they cannot sense. One person working in a small room with the door shut will often push past 1400 parts per million by late morning, and that is roughly where studies start measuring real drops in focus and decision quality. Nobody feels carbon dioxide. They feel vaguely stupid at eleven in the morning and blame the coffee.

One warning is worth passing on to whoever buys it, because the cheap end of this market is thick with a trap. Avoid anything whose spec sheet says "eCO2" or "estimated CO2". Those don't measure carbon dioxide at all. They measure volatile organic compounds and infer a number from them, which means they spike when someone sprays deodorant and sit there calmly in a sealed room. Insist on NDIR or photoacoustic, written into the specification rather than implied by the product name.

And the fix for a high reading is fresh air. Not an air purifier, which does nothing whatsoever for CO2, and not a houseplant either.

### Stop Burst Pipes With Flo by Moen

Managing hundreds of residential units and renovation projects across South Florida for over 14 years, my top smart home gift recommendation this season is the Flo by Moen Smart Water Monitor and Automatic Shutoff.

Water damage is by far the most disruptive and expensive emergency we encounter during property maintenance and renovations. This device actively monitors plumbing line pressure and automatically shuts off the main water supply the moment it detects an abnormal leak or burst pipe.

It delivers immediate real-time smartphone alerts, giving homeowners complete peace of mind whether they are at home or traveling for the holidays.

### Cut Energy Bills With Ecobee Premium

The smart thermostat is my top pick this year and the one I'd point anyone toward is the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium. Retailing around $249, ENERGY STAR puts typical savings at 26% annually, enough to pay for the unit during its first heating or cooling season.

As someone who regularly installs smart thermostats as part of HVAC retrofits, I can attest these savings figures are on target, and that, unlike so many other tech-related gifts, they're still being used long after January. Once Ecobee learns the ins and outs of how your home operates (usually within a week) you can pretty much leave it be, allowing it to efficiently take care of hot and cold temperatures on its own.

Easy to install (in under 30 minutes) and ready to connect to Alexa, Google Home and Apple HomeKit out of the box.

<aside class="expert"><img src="https://featured-com-images.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/profile-images/39f66b43-63f5-4305-9ef1-1c3598d4f7e3.webp" alt="Patrick Kilgannon" loading="lazy"><p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-kilgannon-8b436b352" rel="noopener">Patrick Kilgannon</a>,&nbsp;Residential HVAC Retrofit Specialist,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.customacquality.com" rel="noopener">Custom Air Conditioning &amp; Air Quality</a></p></aside>

### Monitor Appliance Energy With Wi-Fi Outlets

My pick is a Wi-Fi smart plug with energy monitoring. It's the cheapest way to make an ordinary home smart: it works with Alexa and Google Assistant and needs no rewiring. People use it to switch off a geyser, room heater or set-top box on a schedule, and the energy readings show which appliances quietly waste power on standby. Unlike a smart speaker or camera, it has no subscription and no microphone or camera to worry about. One tip: buy a plug rated for the load you'll use (16A for heaters and geysers), and check that it works on the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band your router uses.

<aside class="expert"><img src="https://featured-com-images.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/profile-image/f2c5b853-1720-474b-92c8-5bd3fb8252d5.webp" alt="Kitek Sood" loading="lazy"><p><a href="https://in.linkedin.com/in/kitek-sood-6566a69b" rel="noopener">Kitek Sood</a>,&nbsp;Founder &amp; Editor,&nbsp;<a href="https://thegadgetgyaan.com" rel="noopener">GadgetGyaan</a></p></aside>

### Run a Local-First Matter Hub

I'd look at a local-first AI smart home hub running Matter for your cameras, locks, and sensors. Doing HVAC work, I've noticed devices that keep data on-site make remote troubleshooting way easier, which clients love when winter storms mess with connections. Local processing beats cloud because your system still works if your internet drops, and your camera footage stays in your house instead of on some server somewhere.

<aside class="expert"><img src="https://featured-com-images.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/profile-images/2de001d5-6040-4df2-a449-dc258c6a19b3.webp" alt="Jeff Jennings" loading="lazy"><p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeff-jennings-2aa426284/" rel="noopener">Jeff Jennings</a>,&nbsp;Strong Heating and Cooling LLC,&nbsp;<a href="https://strongheatingcooling.com" rel="noopener">Strong Heating and Cooling LLC</a></p></aside>

### Automate Appliances With Kasa KP125M

For most households, I'd recommend the TP-Link Kasa KP125M smart plug. It's useful even for someone who isn't already deep into smart-home technology because it supports Matter, works across the major smart-home platforms, and adds energy monitoring to ordinary devices such as lamps, coffee makers, fans, and dehumidifiers.

What makes it a particularly good holiday gift is that it provides an immediate benefit without requiring the recipient to replace anything they already own. They can automate a device in minutes, control it remotely, and see how much electricity it is actually using. It's a simple entry point into the smart home that remains useful long after the holidays.

<aside class="expert"><img src="https://featured-com-images.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/profile-images/9131ee50-feb7-40f2-8002-416dbb4a2406.webp" alt="James Lee" loading="lazy"><p><a href="https://linkedin.com/in/james-lee-93a1a2407" rel="noopener">James Lee</a>,&nbsp;Founder &amp; Home Product Reviewer,&nbsp;<a href="https://thehomepicker.com" rel="noopener">TheHomePicker</a></p></aside>

### Choose eufyCam C35 Without Subscription Fees

Many security camera gifts force monthly subscriptions that keep costing money well past the holidays. The eufyCam C35 sidesteps that via local microSD storage up to 256 GB without any required subscription. The magnetic mount lets you put it up indoors or outdoors without the need for tools. It delivers 1080p Pure Color Vision, AI alerts for people, vehicles and pets, two-way talk, and IP67 weatherproofing. A single payment of $89.99 allows hosts and homeowners to install the camera quickly for monitoring without monthly fees or complex wiring. That's why I pick the eufyCam C35 as the smart home device to gift this 2026 holiday season.

### Deploy a Window Robot

The best smart home product I would suggest giving as a holiday gift is a window-cleaning robot. This is a very useful item that allows homeowners to clean their windows quickly and efficiently, so they don't spend too much time on the task. It is also great for cleaning the windows of homes with big windows, sliding glass doors, or hard-to-reach exterior glass, making what could otherwise be a long and frustrating task much more manageable.

In order to choose the best window-cleaning robot, I would select one that has powerful suction, has several safety mechanisms built in, and either includes an emergency backup battery or a safety tether to prevent it from falling if the power goes out. I also need to point out that even though window-cleaning robots do most of the hard work for us, they cannot clean every part of our windows; there will still be some areas (such as corners and window frames) that require manual cleaning. Lastly, I should mention that while I believe a robot vacuum would make a great present for people who want clean windows but dislike doing the cleaning themselves, it will continue to provide benefits for many months after Christmas.

### Make a Speaker Your Home Command Center

There can only be one smart home device that is perfect for gifting, and, strangely enough, a lot of people seem to skip this one and rather invest in something more flashy, like a smart thermostat or smart doorbell. So my top recommendation for a smart home gift this holiday season is a smart speaker.

It is simply something every living room should have. Beyond blessing your friends and family with a speaker that just plays music, the bigger, better models act as a command center for almost all other connected smart home devices. Essentially, you are not just gifting a boom box, but a mini command center where they can comfortably control their devices through voice commands.

### Catch Leaks Before Major Damage

The smart home gift I actually recommend isn't a speaker or a thermostat. It's a $40 Wi-Fi water leak sensor you tuck under a water heater or behind a toilet, because it catches a drip while it's still a two-minute fix instead of a repair bill with a comma in it.

I run Koen Plumbing out of the North Dallas metro, serving Richardson, Plano, and Garland. I stuck one of these under my own water heater before I started recommending them to customers. A few weeks in, my phone buzzed at 6am. Moisture detected. The pan was barely damp, just a slow weep off a fitting. Nothing dramatic. But on a Texas slab, that's exactly the kind of leak that goes unnoticed for weeks while the water wicks under the flooring, and then you're looking at warped wood and mold in the walls.

Here's why it makes a good gift. It's cheap, it installs in thirty seconds (no plumber needed), and it protects the person you're giving it to from the exact disaster they'd never think to watch for. Pair it with a smart shutoff if you want the premium version, but the little sensor alone does most of the work.

The best smart home gift isn't the flashiest one. It's the one that tells you about a problem while it's still the size of a drip.

### Build a Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Network

Skip the smart speaker this year and get your loved ones a decent mesh Wi-Fi system that supports Wi-Fi 7. Even better, one that has wired backhaul. Almost every smart home problem I hear about is actually a network problem. Smart bulbs not responding. Doorbell cameras not syncing. Thermostats 'forgetting' their schedules. It's all device-bashing when the real problem is a solitary router in a cupboard struggling to support thirty or so devices spread across two floors of a house.

A couple of winters ago I helped sort out a load of smart home kit at my parents' house that kept switching off and losing contact. It seemed like a job for lots of smart plugs and a few cameras, but after a few days they'd all stopped working and my dad was about to bin them all. I managed to sort out the issue with their router - swapping their old single device for a three node mesh system and positioning one of the nodes near the back of the house where the biggest black spot was. It's worked a treat ever since - same devices, no new kit, and they all work.

I look for simple-to-reboot-to-factory-default apps and the ability to segregate their 'dumb' camera/home sensors from their laptops etc. by setting up a guest/anonymous/IoT smart device-only network etc.

It's not a showy gift, but when you do finally get round to buying them some smart toys, this will actually make them work. So, fix the fundamentals first, and then you can add all the various smart devices as you go along.

### Place Leak Detectors Before Disaster Strikes

What's the best tech gift to give this holiday season? Forget smart speakers and video doorbells (although they're cool, too). I'm a big advocate for smart water leak detectors.

As an insurance agent, I see first-hand the impact of water damage in people's homes. In fact, it's the most common and expensive claim we see at our brokerage. Last winter, one of our clients went away for a weekend ski trip. When he returned, he discovered three inches of standing water in his finished basement, resulting in $15,000 in repairs. A smart leak detector, which is a simple $20 sensor, would have alerted him to the problem via his phone before his floor was compromised.

A smart leak detector is an affordable and thoughtful gift idea this holiday season, which will give your family and friends some much-needed peace of mind (and save them a potentially huge headache and insurance claim down the road).

### Deter Burglars With Scheduled Lamp Light

I'd give a smart plug. Twenty dollars, plugged into an ordinary lamp in the front room.

Most people reach for a doorbell camera when they're buying for someone who travels. A camera records the person walking up your path. It does nothing to stop them picking your house in the first place.

Here's another thing I've noticed.

A house with lights going on and off at odd hours reads as occupied, and three weeks of darkness reads as empty to anyone paying attention.

Set the plug to random mode so the lamp comes on somewhere between six and half seven, off around eleven. Put a second one in a back bedroom running a different schedule, because two rooms lighting at the same minute every night looks like exactly what it is.

Pick a lamp that sits behind a curtain rather than in a window. You want the glow visible from the street, not the bulb.

The thing nobody mentions is the router. Smart plugs die when the Wi Fi drops, so buy one with a stored schedule that keeps running offline.

My own place runs two of these whenever I'm away. Twice now a neighbour has mentioned they thought I was home.

### Set Scenes With Philips Hue Lights

I've had Philips Hue lights in my workspace for months. Setting up AR-inspired scenes for content reviews takes me seconds now. Switching moods is two taps. What I keep telling people is that Hue works with everything, Apple, Android, Alexa, whatever. No lock-in. Gift the starter kit this holiday season to anyone who wants their space to actually respond to what they're doing.

### Install Motorized Shades for Sun Protection

A home automation product I would love to gift this holiday season is a smart motorized shade system such as Lutron Serena or Eve MotionBlinds. During my years leading large-scale structural renovations, I have seen countless standard manual blinds succumb to premature wear and binding, and constant damage from the harsh daily UV exposure that bleeds through and discolors premium interior paint, quartz countertops, and fine hardwoods. Motorized smart blinds solve this by marrying directly into ambient light sensors and automated daily schedules to raise or lower themselves, passively modulating interior thermal efficiency and blocking direct sunlight during peak solar radiation. They protect delicate high-end room aesthetics and reduce summer AC cooling loads without requiring any manual cord pulling or daily tending, delivering a lasting architectural upgrade merging automated energy management with everyday convenience.

### Track Circuit Use With Emporia Vue

My background is in energy systems, operations, and helping homeowners understand how their home actually works - so when it comes to smart home devices that make a real difference, I pay attention to what moves the needle.

My pick for 2026: a **smart home energy monitor**, specifically the **Emporia Vue**. It clips onto your breaker panel and shows you exactly where your electricity is going, circuit by circuit, in real time on your phone.

I've walked into homes where the homeowner had no idea their old water heater or HVAC was quietly eating 40% of their bill. A device like this makes that invisible waste visible overnight. That's genuinely useful information, not just a cool gadget.

For anyone already thinking about solar, an EV charger, or a backup generator, this is the perfect starting point - it tells you exactly what you're working with before you invest in anything bigger.

<aside class="expert"><img src="https://featured-com-images.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/profile-images/fc987f48-a8f3-43a5-8b9e-339a1c65d0a1.webp" alt="Ernie Bussell" loading="lazy"><p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/ernie-bussell-6798a3147" rel="noopener">Ernie Bussell</a>,&nbsp;CEO,&nbsp;<a href="https://yourhomesolar.com" rel="noopener">Your Home Solar</a></p></aside>

### Balance Rooms With Standalone Sensors

Running an HVAC company in the Chicago suburbs, I've installed hundreds of smart home devices. My pick for this holiday season is the **Ecobee SmartSensor** -- not the thermostat itself, but the standalone room sensors you place throughout the house.

Most people don't realize their thermostat only reads temperature in one spot. I've walked into homes in Downers Grove where the living room is freezing while the bedroom is stuffy -- all because the system was reacting to one fixed point on the wall. These sensors fix that by giving your existing smart thermostat actual room-by-room data.

They're affordable enough to gift without breaking the bank, easy to set up without a technician, and they immediately improve how your HVAC system performs -- especially in multi-story homes or houses with uneven heating and cooling. It's one of those gifts that quietly saves energy and improves comfort without anyone having to think about it again.

### Guard Vacation Homes Against Humidity

With over 27 years in Southwest Florida luxury home building, I've seen how smart climate technology protects homes and reduces utility expenses. For this 2026 holiday season, I recommend gifting the **Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium**.

For homeowners who travel frequently or split time between locations, it allows you to monitor indoor humidity remotely and pre-cool the house before you arrive. This level of remote control prevents moisture issues in humid climates and keeps energy costs manageable.

It also supports voice-activated adjustments, making it easy to fine-tune bedroom temperatures for better sleep without touching a physical wall switch. It delivers practical, everyday luxury while optimizing your home's long-term energy efficiency.

### Set Zone Temperatures With Connected Controls

As CEO of Mackey Services handling HVAC installs across Dickinson and League City homes for three decades, I see daily how smart controls fix real comfort gaps in local houses.

I recommend gifting a smart thermostat paired with zoning controls. It lets owners set separate temperatures for upstairs and downstairs zones without running a second full system.

In two-story homes here a single downstairs thermostat often shuts off before bedrooms reach comfort, but the smart setup with dampers keeps every area at the exact setting wanted.

Commuters heading to NASA or Houston also gain remote phone access to adjust before leaving or returning, plus alerts if temperatures spike while away.

### Build Private Motion Sensors With eSpectre

I'd gift eSpectre, a tiny Wi-Fi motion sensor you build yourself from a €10 ESP32 board and open-source software. It's built to recognise motion by sensing Wi-Fi wave disruptions, featuring no camera or microphone and retaining all data locally on the chip.

It is easy to setup to work with Home Assistant in a matter of 15 minutes and very useful for turning lights on or off, cutting heating/cooling down in an empty room or monitoring a relative without a lens staring at him. It's mysterious and affordable, and it's the antithesis of the smart home with cameras everywhere!

It's available at https://github.com/francescopace/espectre

### Ease Winter Dryness With Warm Mist

The one smart home device I recommend gifting this holiday season is a filter-free warm-mist humidifier. It solves a problem almost everyone has from November to March — dry air that cracks skin, wakes you up coughing, and makes the furnace work harder — and it costs nothing to run beyond electricity, since there's no filter subscription to maintain. In our testing at Hamejur, models like the Honeywell HWM845 earned their place because you can refill them without spills and clean them in minutes, which is exactly the bar a gift should clear: useful the first week and still in use the next winter.

### Let a Roomba Handle Daily Floors

Robot vacuums are programmed to clean while you're taking care of your kids or fixing dinner. I got a Roomba about 2 years ago now, and I am so glad that I did. Mine typically cleans in the morning before I even get a chance to come downstairs. I honestly would estimate that it has saved me 20-30 minutes every day.

Another great bonus if you have pets. I guarantee pet hair shows up 3x faster than dust. If you were to skip one day of sweeping/vacuuming your house it would be noticeable. Mine picks up the fur without fail, and has saved me pulling out my vacuum every other night. Now this still doesn't take the place of a good deep cleaning, but for daily upkeep, it takes that job off your plate.

### Brew Perfect Tea With Teforia

As CEO of Adagio Teas, I recommend the Teforia smart tea maker as a smart home gift for the 2026 holidays. It knows the optimal recipe for each tea variety and adjusts time, temperature, and agitation to bring out intended flavors. That level of control makes it a thoughtful present for tea lovers and for those curious about loose-leaf tea. It retails around $500, and I am happy to share a sample for you to experience firsthand.

### Organize Storage With Niimbot B21 Labels

As a software engineer building tools that bridge physical belongings with digital search, my top recommendation for the 2026 holiday season is a smart label printer like the **Niimbot B21**.

Most households lose hours dragging down storage boxes because handwritten "misc" labels fail, leading people to rebuy items they already own. A smart Bluetooth printer lets anyone instantly generate durable QR labels directly from their phone to turn regular bins into scannable digital twins.

It gives people a fast, practical way to organize messy garages and closets without tedious data entry. It is a genuinely useful device that eliminates everyday household friction instead of just adding another passive screen to the home.

### Upgrade Bathrooms With a Fog-Free Mirror

Leading residential design-build renovations across Orange County at Turn Key Remodel, I see which smart upgrades genuinely improve daily living. For this holiday season, I recommend gifting a smart bathroom mirror equipped with defogging technology and integrated touchscreen LED lighting.

These mirrors eliminate fogged glass after hot showers while providing customizable lighting presets for morning grooming and evening wind-downs. They deliver a luxury, spa-like upgrade without requiring a complete bathroom tear-out.

In our remodeling projects, homeowners consistently appreciate how simple automation elevates everyday comfort and routines. It is a practical gift that delivers noticeable value every single day.
